Educational Tasting: Grape Variety Series: Nero d'Avola of Sicily: 8+ wines (7PM, Wednesday October 7th, 2026)
This is the 5th grape in our Grape Variety Series, and our 1st grape from Sicily! On October 7th, we move on to the most planted red grape in Sicily: Nero d'Avola!
Back in February of 2025 we ran our first class at the store, and it was called Nero d'Avola and Terroir, where we explored the wines of one winery in particular; Gulfi! Without a doubt, the king of Nero d'Avola, but they also set up the perfect class with 4 single vineyards (or contrada) that each showcase a given terroir in a way that is incredibly meaningful in understanding what terroir (soil, climate, topography) can do to a wine. These 4 wines are made identically, and the difference we taste, is purely the terroir, allowing for an even deeper understanding of the range of possibilities for Nero d'Avola.
We will taste those wines again in a sbs (side by side) fashion, but this time alongside a couple of other great wineries in Sicily, as well as a bonus wine with some age. Whether you made the first class, nearly 2 years ago, or missed it, this is a class you do not want to miss. Join us on Wednesday October 7th.
The class includes light appetizers.
Tickets are non-refundable.
*Vintages will not be the same as photo.
Grape Variety Series:
At the Village Wine Merchant, we have variety first approach, with the feeling that the grape variety is the most important aspect of a wine. Nature's first gift. Without the grape, there is no wine! Second, is terroir; the soil, the exposure, the unique climate that enhances the particularity of that given grape, making it something you couldn't find anywhere else in the world. Next, is human intervention; first in viticulture, and then in winemaking. Both require artistic creativity, science, and more importantly a diligent and unrelenting willingness to be present in observation, letting the grapes, and the must guide our decisions.
