Product Details
Cava, Catalonia, Spain
Grapes: Xarel-lo, Parellada, Macabeo
Straw yellow in color with golden hues. Aromas of apple and pear coming from the Macabeo and Parellada varieties together with some bakery notes. Small and very persistant bubbles.
A structured cava on the palate, well balanced acidity that tenses the whole from beginning to finish. The bubble gives a sensation of creaminess, providing volume and softness to the structure bestowed by the acidity and extending the aromas of white fruit and spices that repeat on the palate. Balanced finish that harmonises its acidity, leaving behind a sensation of freshness and volume due to its slight content in sugars.
About the producer
Cavas Bohigas is a cellar creating wines and cavas with more than eight centuries of history. It is located in the privileged surroundings of the "Anoia river basin", in Òdena, more specifically, at the cellars and vineyards of Can Macià, with more than 35 hectares of vineyard on 200 hectares of property including vineyards, cereal crops and woodland. With more than 800 years old, Can Macià, classified of historical and artistic interest, is appreciated for the beauty of its buildings. Around the manor house -which maintains the authentic style of a Catalan farmhouse- are the different spaces of the winery and cellars, as well as the chapel, which was built in 1922 in devotion to the Virgen de la Merced and which contains paintings by Josep Pey. The cellar currently employ a team of twelve people, and the annual production is close to 550,000 bottles, 500,000 bottles of cava and 50,000 of wine. Since 2002, as to gain entry to the foreign market, Bohigas has formed part of Terra Nostra de Vinos, a consortium comprised of five cellars with different designations of origin. More than 80% of the production is distributed to the foreign market. The first documents of Can Macià (then called Mas Moragues) date back to the 13th century. Since then, the farm has always been in the hands of the same family, although the surnames have been changing and with them, the name of the farmhouse. In 1933, Joan Vives Gibert reorganized the productive structure of Can Macià to produce sparkling wines aged in cava, which were released on the market at Christmas 1936. But their marketing was halted by the Spanish Civil War. It is the nephew of Joan Vives, Josep Maria Bohigas, who takes over the management of the winery and promotes the marketing of the cavas already bearing his surname, Bohigas. Later generations, with the Bohigas net at the helm (Jordi Casanovas Bohigas), followed the family tradition by increasing the volume of business, especially in the foreign market. With Victoria Giró, wife of Jordi, the estate of Can Macià, in Gelida, is added to the business. Now, Maria Casanovas Giró, great-granddaughter of Josep Maria Bohigas, continues to join efforts in technological innovation and quality improvement.
