About Bodegas D. Mateos

The year is 1886, and a young couple decides to plant a small vineyard in the foothills of Mount Yerga. Little did they know the importance this decision would have for the following generations.

138 years later, that simple vineyard has grown to 100 hectares helping Bodegas d. Mateos design emotions through its wines and leave its unique mark. A winery with so much history that every night its walls whisper the stories of grandmothers telling bedtime stories to their grandchildren: a refuge from the disturbing afternoons amongrelations, with the spirit of grandmother Guillermina, making sure her legacy is not lost.

Seven generations later, it is dawn in Aldeanueva de Ebro, and the first rays of sunlight shine through the slits in the blinds, lighting each wall of the room as if it were gunpowder; writing unique languages and emotions in the corners. Mateo steps down with a new story to tell, ideas that flutter around a fixed goal, to overcome. Only one maxim repeated every morning, the means by which it is expressed, the wine and the 5 senses; the rest, a simple desire for knowledge that will change the future of the wines.

Knowledge runs through nature, allowing us to write on the margins and play with the ideas of dawn, through field trials collaborating with the La Rioja Research Centre (CIDA). This provides us with a level of demand and unique originality for our wines.

The daytime hours is whenover 100 hectares of Bodegas d. Mateos, in the heart of Rioja Baja, are fed; a sea of vines at the foot of Mount Yerga. Wrapped in the aroma of thyme and rosemary, the best of our secrets is hidden: roots steeped in history with vines up to 70 years old. Goblet trained plots, carefully nurtured from pruning to the most exquisite selection of the grape, where these are separated according to the wine to be made.The best intention is born of details, of four fields with their own well-defined character.
