2015 Reinhold Haart Wintricher Ohligsberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs
The Haart family has been based in the village of Piesport, Germany since 1337. The winery, Reinhold Haart was founded in 1921 and is managed Karl-Theo Haart, his wife Edith and their son Johannes, who represents the family’s 20th generation to work in wine.
The 19 acre estate is planted exclusively to Riesling and includes four vineyards on the left bank of the Mosel River and one on the right. The Piesporter Goldtropfchen Vineyard, a steep south facing amphitheater, is weathered soils of blue/grey Devonian slate and clay. One of the estate’s smaller plots, the one acre Domherr Vineyard planted on fine-grained slate soils, sits within the Goldtropfchen at the base of a steep slope. The quarter acre Kreuzwingert parcel sits mid-slope and is planted on rich clay and the 2½ acre Grafenberg Vineyard, with soils of quartzite and iron, borders Goldtropfchen. The 2½ acre Ohligsberg Vineyard, located on the right bank of the Mosel River, is planted on hard blue/gray slate with layered quartzite. The estate ferments 100% of each vintage with wild yeast in stainless steel (90%) and in neutral 1,000 liter oak barrels.
